![]() It sounds like that at present only about 1/3 of your practice is on things you enjoy and I think the amount should be higher. Another approach would be to ask him to give you a choice of 3 pieces each time he assigns a new piece. Don’t need to practice Alberti Bass any longer than necessary to get into the Mozart Sonata in C.Why not try talking to your teacher so that his/her assigned pieces are also interesting(and still keep playing a few you choose on the side)? Is your teacher assigning you only classical pieces but your real interest lies in popular music? Especially as an adult I think you should have some say about the pieces your teacher assigns you. Wouldn’t spend more than 20 min of a practice session on just exercises. Practicing techniques is going to help me learn my repertoire pieces. At the same time I balance my learning with interesting pieces. Of course technical exercises are important. Last year I played “What a Wonderful World”. I downloaded a version of “Memory” from Andrew Lloyd Webber “Cats” and I got “My Heart Will Go On” theme from “Titanic”. I wouldn’t limit myself to scale & arpeggios exercises and the teacher’s assigned pieces. When I hear an interesting piece on the radio like “when You Wish Upon a Star”, I’d find a piano arrangement online. When I started piano as an adult, I was aware the need to find repertoire pieces to keep me engaged.
